Mother's Day is coming up on May 14th...The best mother's day gift? Hugs and kisses and words written from the heart. Those little words become archivable keepsakes that are cherished forever.
Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 in the U.S. by Julia Ward Howe, author of the Battle hymn of the Republic's words and Howe held Mother's Day meetings in Boston annually.
In 1907 Ana Jarvis, from Philadelphia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Ms. Jarvis persuaded her mother's church in Grafton, West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. By the next year Mother's Day was also celebrated in Philadelphia.
By 1911 Mother's Day was celebrated in almost every state. In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made Mother's Day a national holiday. It is still held each year on the 2nd Sunday of May in the tradition of Jarvis' original day of honor.
