Blue jeans: the uniform of the American West -- the rugged pants that could stand up to the prairie wear and the brunt of the mesquite. They have become the casual uniform the world over. An article in the Middle East Times notes that now they are being introduced to muslims as a comfortable dress for worship and are creating a stir in Pakistan. Designed by an Italian company, the Al Quds Jeans might catch on. Ralph Lauren is stopping his Polo jeans line.
As soon as I could choose my own clothes, I wore Levis. (Now I go to Old Navy). My hubby wears Wranglers. Cowboys and guys who wear jeans and boots wouldn't wear their jeans without starching and ironing the creases in so they look like white lines down the front. I was the only one my philosophy class of 500 my freshman year of college to wear a dress. It was right back into the denim for this gal. Comfort Clothes. Snappy Casual for Texans. A denim burka? Too hot, literally to be cool. I sure wish someone would fancy up those black burkas -- even just a little bit. Trying to be fancy with just the feet showing must be really, really hard for those muslim mamas. An English writer who ventured into the Middle East and wrote about it (who was that, help me out) said wearing those burkas was freeing. That was in Victorian times...
Well, Iraq loves Lionel Richie. That just goes to show you that you can't second guess which cultural things will be big and how West translates to East. Jeans. A truely original American fashion design that came from the West. Still relevant.
I think I will change my name from Gene to Jean. I would like to be an American original.
