I never did get that big pumkin carved for the Halloween holidays but a friend of mine sent me, via email, a link to Virtual Pumpkin Carving (thanks, Leslie!). We all played with different designs, as a family, around the computer screen in the kitchen, waiting for trick-or-treaters to come to the door.
Playing with virtual pumpking carving was hassle free. No mess. I've been reading in this week's New Yorker about the inventor of Sims and his new game, to be released in '07, called Spore. It was covered in an excellent article on the gaming industry and trends in the November Atlantic Monthly. I have a nephew interested in the art of virtual designs. This is all very interesting, all of the theory and developments in new media and new virtual spaces. The Sims -- released just a few years ago, became the first game to really draw in girls. The industry, launched with Pong and Space Invaders in the late '70s took a huge leap with Sims and, with Second Life also a place to make/spend (virtual) money... new things are around the corner. The surface has just been scratched. Who knows.
