The Bergdorf-Goodman windows are some of the best artistically-designed windows on Fifth Avenue in mid-town Manhattan. This one, for the holiday shoppers, has a neon sign, "all I want" in front of mens' clothing.
Manhattan became the city of commerce about the time that the steamships really began to roll. They captured the nexus of trade. Stuff was where the money was -- NYC then became the financial center of the world.
We are innundated with messages to buy, buy, buy. America -- the consumerist nation. What is the price of a child? What is the price of a mother? What is the price of happiness? What is the price of a good marriage?
Where do you buy love, the greatest gift of all? Gifts. A representation of concern, a representation of love. Shopping for them in Manhattan may be the ultimate shopping experience, if you like to shop. Everything I've seen, though, shows the online buying patterns hitting records.
You will be proud to know I have not bought a single thing. I'm waiting to see if we have enough to buy a telescope so we can all stargaze together. Otherwise? A giant thick blanket to spread out on our front lawn and we'll wait til next year for the telly.
