My sister-in-law had to contend with a moose wandering through her yard when she lived in Alaska, but she never built a playground because her son who moved to Alaska with them was by then in college.
My NYC friend, Carol, sent me photos of this playground, right, built by parents of two boys, 3 and 4, in the Hillside area of Anchorage, Alaska. This was the scene the morning after they constructed the play area. Beary dangerous!
In Texas I had to contend with a water moccasin and a coral snake in our backyard and coyotes in the country. In Oklahoma we had a rattler on our driveway and a scorpion in the hall and the ever present possibility of fiddlebacks in dark corners.
I'm not sure what dangers lurk that need a mother's protective instinct in NYC other than the constant threat of a child wandering into the street.
Beary dangerous indeed! Living in a big city, you are presented with different stuff. I remember my daughter, aged two, playing in the sandbox in our local public garden and showing me sandy dog poop in her hand!

Hey, those bears just came over to play! In the city the predators are much more dangerous.

I will stop moaning about black widow spiders now!

Wow! That's amzazing. The worst I've had to contend with are raccoons and possums. And the occasional gopher. I prefer the bears, but only from a distance.
