Before my husband retired officially, he began leaving his ties behind here and there. One in Chicago, another in NYC. He's worn ties forever, it seems, as one of the suit guys.
Wedding ties. Ah, those are of a different sort. Where was I? Oh yes. Neckties.
At long last, are ties out? So asks another blogger, Jeff Jarvis, writing about cutting ties. Things are much more loose now -- connections, morals, relationships. Think about this culturally.
On the cusp of change...wither goest the ties? Serious yellow power descended into the non-serious. Check out the whimsical ties of those Martha's Vineyard (Vines) boys (pictured at left) who quit corporate NYC jobs to play, spreading their fashions slowly south and now west. Trickling up, their college clothes trends at selected schools are hot according to my daughters who have spotted them and are buying them. They should know. One determining factor of checking out colleges was checking out the college stores. It was the Oxford college that developed the college tie, the roots of our necktie, you know.
The "four in hand", the "windsor" or the "half windsor" were all taught to me by my father (no clip-ons even as a child). In College, my frat taught the pledges how to create the "D... Dimple" just below the knot. Having a properly tied tie and your shoes properly shined, is something anyone can learn and afford to do. I was taught it was like brushing your teeth or combing your hair. You don't have to wear one, but if you do, wear it well!

I wore ties for years. I'm thankful that's over!
