They are being subsidized to death in those places. We don't get much in the way of farm subsidies here, with the result that we have an abundant supply of local fruits and vegetables all year around.
In the old days this island was mostly in sugar cane: that's right: all that land was being used to produce about the worst food there is.
So things can change for the better. We can't lose track of that.

I don't think this is going to get "fixed" anytime soon, unfortunately. When you grow up eating TV dinners, learning to cook and taking the time to read labels is out of the question.

Those who have seen the contents of my fridge and pantry think I'm a weirdo. And when they see and taste what I can produce with what I do buy they declare me a genius. Am I? I don't think so. All I'm doing is what my grandmother and my mother did: use wholesome ingredients, cook from scratch and stay away from sweeteners other than sugar.
