We have collected letters, dug through records, visited cemeteries, geneology libraries and court houses and documented bloodlines, stories and collected photos and histories. Then, taking it as far as we could, I published a couple of books for the family and then we boxed it all up and put it in storage.
My husband, my mother and I all share this hobby and enjoy being the family historians and archivists. Our interest can be a gift to others and a project to dive into.
Now we will be pulling it out again to take advantage of publishing, software and online research that wasn't available or is now further developed. One of the software tools that I'll be using, I'm sure, will be book publishing through Blurb. Maybe I'll do a family cookbook, too. You can even publish blogs through this company. I haven't done scrapbooks the old way in four years; I've published digitally via i-Photo and Shutterfly.
Genetic Geneology -- the DNA Ancestry Project -- might be the another thing we start looking at, but probably not for awhile. Learning about my own DNA and worrying if I have a cancer gene or somesuch -- not ready for that, yet, as well. After stopping in the late 1990s, online developments are ripe for picking it all back up again. Maybe I'll publish photos of my great grandmother and my great aunt - my pen namesakes.
I did a Blurb cookbook last year. But your genealogy thing gives me a great idea. Now I need a sabbatical!

I have often wondered about how somebody gets started in tracing their roots. It always sounds real complicated to me... and I'm not so sure I have the energy for it, you know? Like "Magpie" said, in her comment, I think I need a sabbatical in order to find the time to do this.
It sure does sound interesting though... everytime I think about it. Perhaps one day. I'll enjoy reading about your genealogy adventures though. :-)
