At the edge of the Navajo reservation lands west of Farmington, New Mexico, my cousin took me to a trading post and there were shelves and shelves of turquoise silver jewelry, some for sale, some not. Dead pawn is the word for the used jewelry that is for sale. Dead Pawn?
Navajo silversmiths craft beautiful works. I had my husband pull out the bolo tie that his father wore in these parts because that is the tie most seen around Santa Fe... if the men wear ties.
"Dead pawn is the word" Naughty. Dead pawn is the PHRASE.
Yr friendly nitpicker.

I haven't seen one of those string neckties in ages. A friend of ours, a scientist at Bell Labs, used to wear them and was considered quite devoid of fashion sense.

I love turquoise! Especially those turquoise and silver combinations. =)

I saw lots of those ties worn in AZ when we moved there, along with other turquoise jewelry and it was quite the fashion. True in New Mexico, too, on visits there, but elsewhere the wearers were viewed quite differently. Just as were the mumus I saw in Hawaii in the '60s as common womens' wear, but not so much on the mainland.
